Research

What is research

Research is the process of gathering information through different ways.

Primary research is collecting information directly from a source.

Examples-

  • Focus groups-  A certain demographic group of people having  discussion on a subject. It is used to learn about the opinions on a topic that could effect future actions.
  • Surveys-Asking people questions through a questionnaire to get information on of different topics and interests.

Advantages-It is more unique making it more original.

  • Can ask more intricate specific questions .

Disadvantages-More time consuming.

  • Needing to plan more
  • more money may be needed.

Qualitative research-is a method of research used in primary research. It is a personal  opinion which allows you to explore meaningful and  complex ideas and experiences in more detail..

Example-A movie review blog is where a person gives their personal opinion on a movie. This can be detailed in what they liked and disliked about the movie. This can sway readers on whether they would go to watch the movie. It can also affect the viewer's opinion on the people in the movie such as director or actor. This can affect future projects of these people such as work and investment.

What are the consequences of not doing the right research?

Slander-Giving misinformation about a person in speech.

Libel-Written misinformation about a person that may affect their life.

These could could lead to lawsuits so primary and secondary research done on a subject must be reliable and fact checked.

what is better

Secondary research is collecting second hand research which has already been done.

Examples.- This can be from the internet or books.

Advantages-It is easier to obtain taking less time.

Disadvantages- Not original people may have see it before people may find it boring already knowing the information.

Quantitative research-Research based on data such as sales and rating for films.

Example-Rotten tomatoes is a rating website for movies. Movie critics both public and professional rate and review movies. This information then is converted into quantitative data giving an average rating for a movie. This is very important for a movies success as early reviews can sway a publics perception of the movie deciding whether they will go and see it. This will affect the movies box office rating and the money made.

market research

what is it-Market research is the process of gathering information on a costumers needs and practices.

USP- Unique selling point is feature of a product or service that gives you an advantage in the market that competitors lack or don't have.

audience research

what is it-Audience research is research implemented on a specific group to gather information on their attitudes, opinions or preferences on a topic.

eg.BARB

Focus groups- A certain demographic group of people having discussion on a subject. It is used to learn about the opinions on a topic that could effect future actions.

BARB-Broadcasting Audience Research Board is a company that is used to learn about audience viewing figures

legal consideration

copyright

what is it-copyright protects original literary dramatic music and aartistic works. This allows an original work to be considered as property that can be owned by someone.

copyright laws

breaching copyright in a production

to breach copyright it would have to be proved you have

The Associated Press vs. Fairey

Case- Street artist Shephard Fairey created the the HOPE poster based design from a photo for Obamas presidential campaign in 2008. The poster became popular in the campaign independent from the administration but approved. In 2009 the original photo photographed by Associated Press freelancer Mannie Garcia issued a lawsuit wanting compensation for its use in the HOPE poster.

Outcome-Both settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

significance-This shows even if you try to follow copyright law you can still get sued.

Public domain

what is it- Public domain is any creative material that is not protected by any intellectual property law such as copyright, . This means the public owns the work so no one can obtain or own the content. They can use the material however they want without any repercussions regarding intellectual laws as it doesn't belong to anyone. This can be done by creative material that is old or someone willingly shares it to the public.

example-One example is Mozart work. Mozarts work are all free to use by the public

Creative Commons

what is it-It is non profit organisation and network committed to educational access of creative works available for others to share and develop upon at different levels of permission.

  • Attribution (CCBY) is a creative commons license is the most flexible as you can use the wok in any way you like without any legal repercussions.
  • Attribution No Derivatives (CC BYND) You can use the work but you cant edit or change it in any way.
  • In both licensees you need to credit the author

example music site

this site gives royalty free music for comercial use

https://www.jamendo.com/?language=en

Fair Usage

What is it- Fair use is a legal document saying you can reuse copyrighted material without permission from copyright owner.

myths

  • 1 -Give credit tot he copyright owner it is fair use

  • 2 -Disclamer put on a video it is fair use

  • 3 -Entertainment or non profit uses are fair use

  • 4 -Adding original to copyright work is fair use

example

Legal Contracts

what is it-It is a legal contract that legally protects a people from a product or service signed by all participants involved to set out terms and dividends set to each person involved.

lighting

Three point lighting is the standard lighting technique used for filming and photos. It uses artificial lighting, so it is used mostly indoors but can be used outside with natural light. It uses three different light sources placed in three different positions with varying light intensities. playing around with light distance and angles it can effect a scene .

All lighting is connected to a lighting box which is connected to a lighting desk setup. The lighting desk controls the light intensity of each light source. The main room has the lighting box where Arri Lights used for the key and fill light where plugged in. The light intensity of all lights is controlled from another room next to the main room using the lighting desk. The back light and the ceiling lights are already connected to the box so it doesn't need to be plugged in. The lights where difficult to control as instructions had to be shouted out because the lighting desk operator did not have a visual of the three point lighting setup this was an inconvenience and inefficient.

Why is lighting important-outdoor lighting can determine what time of day it is and is vital for the audience to know a timeline. If the light is constantly changing in an outside environment it can lead to confusion in time scale effecting continuity.

What does it do - Good lighting is important as it tells the audience where to look drawing the viewers eyes to a subject. By manipulating light it can control the mood and atmosphere of a scene giving different textures or vibrancy of colour. This can intern reflect the phycology of a character or setting giving depth visually. If this is done wrong the picture may not come out as intended giving the wrong impression of a scene. In conclusion it can help define the genre of the film and help the viewer focus on important subject.

task

In the lesson we had a task of taking pictures using using three point lighting technique. We used light console setup and gels.

key light

How to set up.-If you are only using one light that is the key light. The key light is the main light that focuses on the subject. It can be placed in the front of the subject at an angle usually the left or right side. This lights up the side of the subject. It is used for mood as well as defining the form of a character to control the mood of a scene. It allows the audience to know what to focus on. I was the subject of the testing of the key light. It shows one side of my face being lit up on the right in the picture in the dark room. The light should of been put further to the right for a darker side to show example of a key light.

fill light

How to set up.- If you are using two lights the second light will be called the fill light it will be placed on the opposite side of the key light. It is used to increase the use of ambient light in a scene to reduce contrast of the harsh shadow caused by the fill light. This interns softens dark shadow on the side of the subject. This changes the mood through changes of light temperature and colour. Softness can be changed increasing and deceasing the distance to the subject to the light and the light intensity. In this picture the fill light was on my right it clearly showing the softening of the shadow on my face on the left. I could have increased the brightness to show my whole face clearly.

back light

How to set up.- If you are using three lights the back light is placed behind the subject. This is used to highlight and emphasise the subjects contour of the body. This can create a dramatic effect as it gives a the subject a greater sense of importance in a setting. In conclusion it gives a dramatic contrast to the background when used by itself. When used in a three point lighting it helps in define the features and outlines.

how does it effect the scene-this draws audiences focus on a subject.

gels-

what is it-Gels are transparent plastic material use to put over a light. The light is diffused through the gell giving different effects to a scene used to control the colour of the work. It is used to convey different mood to a scene such as red to convey love or anger depending on how the scene is shot.

how was it used-This was shown in pictured taken on the right showing red and green gells used to diffuse on to me. It looks good as it shows a clear sign of gells used.

what did you do-

how cow could you improve-

A problem encountered when taking pictures is when I moved mid shot the picture came out blurry. I also had some problem when looking into the camera as the lights went into my eyes this is also a health hazard as lights can easily damage eyes if precautions are taken. I learned this. It is vital to just the lights before putting subject infront and to make sure the subject is comfortable with the lighting aswell as taking care.

what went well

what went wrong

what do we have to improve on

What have I done?"

"How did I get to the final product?"

How challenging did I find putting this all together?"

"Was it really that easy?" (Honesty is key)"If I were to do X again, how could I improve?"

Where do I need to improve on? Why?"

"How can I make my next project even better?"

types of shots

Opening shot- Opening shot is the initial opening shot to the world

Establishing shot-Establishing shot shows the context of the scene

Long shot-Long shot establishes the setting where a character is.

Camera angles

Dutch angle: The Dutch angle shot gives a disorientation or imbalance effect as we usually see things naturally at 180 degree .It enhances tension, giving the effect of fear or unsteadiness.

Low angle: Low angle shot is shot below the eyeline looking up this shot makes the subject look more dominant and powerful.

High angle makes the subject look little and week.

Hear it shows me at a low position. I directed someone to take the picture out of the window. Making sure she took it with me in the centre of the picture. This shows a clear presentation of a high angle shot.

What i could improve on- I could have taken more shots of building or objects at different zoom ins to show more of a understanding of high angle shots.

Long shot shows what is going on in the setting it can also be used to shows the scale of what is happening in the scene. Below shoes picture of me a an object at a long distance. It shows the background of a busy road.

Full shot shows the subjects full body on the screen this allows the viewer to see  body language and phicique in action.

Medium full shot emphasis the subject and the setting giving equal presence on screen.

Task

Medium shot is taken from the waist up

Medium close up is shot from the chest up of a character used to show emotion from the upper body.

Close up shot shows the subjects face to show emotion.

Extreme close up shot shows focuses on facial feature such as the eyes or mouth in detail.

What went well-in each camera angle I was able to take a picture for all different aspects and instruct someone to take a picture of me as well in those camera angles. I took pictures of an object the dog sculpture and building.

What can I improve on-I could of taken more pictures of a moving subject in video this could of helped me understand how to record in that camera angle and what complications could occur.

researching how to setup tripod

In this lesson I researched different examples of videos how demonstrate how to set up a tripod. I went through

Good video

This video is made by Opticron a company that sells lenses and telescopes monoculars used for nature photography.

The video starts with a up beat music with black screen fading into a grey background. The company's logo is highlighted in green and a subtitle of a how to series in white for 10 seconds with the sound and introduction fading into the next scene. The next scene immediately introduces the instructor in a white shirt and a calm voice over. It is  shot in a mid shot with a white background showing only the body and knees of the person and the tripod. 3 point lighting is used as no shadows can be seen with the white background. The instructors uniform and the background allows the black tripod to stand out. A transition of a close up shot of the instructor releasing a tripod leg is shown showing the hand movements as well. The narration of instructions are brief and detailed for each step. The next scene shows a pan shot going up showing the instructor releasing the other legs of the tripod. Blurring out transitions are used through out the video. A still mid close up shot of the camera clamp is shown and demonstrated on until the end of the video. The video ends with a blur transition to a black background and the company's website link.

what i liked and disliked about the video,

The introduction of the video started with a black background that faded into a grey background with a blurring transition. What captured my attention was the company name popping out from the grey background with its subtitle. What i disliked was the the name of the video was at the bottom right corner of the screen that I didn't notice. This was because I was to transfixed on the company name which was bright green and in a larger font which is more noticeable then a white font smaller at the bottom corner of a screen. The edit could be done intentionally to remember and look up the company name. The up beat music prepared me for the video which I liked as it created anticipation.

The production values on this video shows a blank white background and the presenter a white t-shirt this giving the image of a clean look. This also allows the tripod which is black to be clearly seen as it has a stark contrast. The lighting of the video also helps the presenter with no shadows being shown. The pacing of the video was good as I paid attention what it could have had where more shot types as only close up shots and a panning shot going up was used. This is acceptable as it is a formal video needing only close ups. What I disliked was the with the introduction of the camera clamp scene as the shot was continues and I got bored. They could have put in different shots for the different movements of the tripod. The use of transitions for the video was constant which I liked as it gave a sense of familiarity and a rhythm for the video.

what could i take from the video

use of constant transitions

white background and clothing for focus on tripod

fading of music int and out for introduction and ending.

ok video

The video starts with a very brief energetic introduction about the video in a full shot. The setting of the video is a room with a wooden texture indoors giving a calm vibe in contrast to the presenter giving a energetic presentation. It then shows a colourful graphic transition into the video. It starts with a midshot of the presenter introducing himself then talking about the tripod in a midshot. He goes on talking about how to release a leg in detail to make it level in a close up shot of him adjusting it. the presenter goes out of shot to get the camera. H then talks about tips and tricks of handling the camera on the tripod. Different close up shots of him adjusting the camera to fit onto the tripod. He then goes into hazards of the position of the tripod being a trip risk. Ending the video with him running of screen blurring into a blank white screen then a giveaway.

what i liked and disliked

The backdrop of the video was ok it was a bland background of a wooden texture which was good as it allowed me to focus on the presenter. The lighting of the video was good as I could clearly see the presenter they could of used three point lighting to make the presenter pop out more. The use of shot types where little which I liked as it focusses on the tripod and used when needed for the camera. The script dragged on but the presenter did a good work of keeping me engaged with his energetic presentation but it drags on with expansions which could of been cut short such as the releasing of the tripod legs. Sound of the video was great as it dipped into upbeat music whenever the presenter stops talking so there was no void in music keeping me engaged. The graphics of the video where great in introduction but that's all.

Bad video

The video starts of with the presenter introducing herself and what she is going to do in a medium close up shot at a tilt from a high angle. The audio of the video is low quality as it with a lot of reverb from the surroundings. The background of the video is of a room which could be distracting to some people as they look to see what is I the background when getting bored. The room becomes a problem when recording of the video as there is not enough space to record as her head goes out of view in the middle of the video when doing a demonstration. The presenter script drags on as she gives information talking about her own personal development in using the tripod. No editing transitions or different shots are used throughout the video being in a the same continuous position. Lighting is ok using only outdoor lighting. In conclusion not a good video.

ethical considerations

  • Profanity- Profanity is the use of offensive words and language. This could be used as a joke or just being said as off the cuff remark which could damage and offend a person emotionally. A child could hear it which would make it not child friendly. This would then lead it to be reported as it is intended to be a instructional video for all people.
  • what is it.-why is it important-how it could effect a group-examples-how could it be used in your video-
  • Decency-A modest or socially acceptable of conduct and speech. This is important as it can portrays a moral compass that someone has. This can effect the perception of the viewers opinion of the video subject effecting whether they continue watching the video. I could use this in dressing formally, clean clothes and good hygiene.
  • Representation- Representation in the context of media is how religion, race, age national and reginal identity social issues is represented in the media.
  • Race-Race is the physical differences in people based on skin colour. Race in media is important as it reduces the marginalisation of people and can change people idea of that group of people. This could be used in my video to show different people of different races.
  • Gender- Discrimitory remarks to a gender is classed as sexism or transphobic depending on how the person identifies themselves. This is important as society perception on gender is transforming and complicated. If not represented in the right way in media it can offend and damage them as they may be a marginalised group effecting there perception in the publics image of them. This could be put in my video if there is someone in my video of a different gender. They will be presented properly in conformity that would be acceptable to that group not highlighted but taken into consideration.
  • Religion-Ethical considerations for religion can be blasphemy. This is content that could offend a religious group. For my how to video this will not be suitable as it must be able to be viewed by everyone.
  • Sexuality- Is the way people experience and express themselves sexually involving biological, physical and emotional. This is impotent especially now where people are discovering and expanding their understanding of their own sexuality and society as a whole. This could be used to show a person of a marginalised sexuality but not highlighted to not demonise them.

What ethical consideration will be used in my how to video-Due to my video being an instructional video there is a very low chance in offending someone. The video will entirely be instructional so it will focus on the setting up of the tripod and camera. The potential considerations I can take part in my video is profanity no offensive words will be used in the video. Decency could be a potential as I could wear a very provocative clothing. Representation is present as I am Indian and the instructor is white male from England.
